Tips for Taking Beautiful Newborn Photos at Home

One of the most treasured moments in life is bringing a new baby into your family, and it's a memory you want to keep. Though a professional session with a Raleigh newborn photographer would bring in great, timeless images, you can take some sweet newborn photos that you will always treasure right in the comfort of your own home.

Here are some tips to help you capture those adorable, heartwarming moments with your little one.

1. Choose the Right Time
Timing is everything when it comes to newborn photography. The best time for photographing a newborn is within the first 14 days of birth. At this stage, babies are still in that sleepy, curled-up phase, which makes it very easy to capture those classic newborn poses.

If your baby is a few weeks old, that's quite okay! Then, focus on capturing the emergent personality and those tiny details: toes, fingers, and yawns.

2. Find Natural Light
Lighting is key to beautiful photos. Look for a space in your home with plenty of soft, natural light-near a window or a door with sheer curtains works wonderfully.

Avoid using a flash. The flash can be very unkind and too harsh. Pose your baby to fall the light on their face at an angle, giving it softness and dimension through soft shadows.

3. Keep the Room Warm and Cozy
Newborns love to be warm and snug, so make sure the room is at a comfortable temperature. If your baby feels cozy, they’re more likely to stay calm and relaxed during your at-home photo session.

You can also use a portable heater (placed at a safe distance) to keep the area warm if you’re planning to photograph your baby without clothes.

4. Use Simple Props and Backgrounds
You do not need any fancy props for creating wonderful images. A soft blanket, a bedspread of some neutral color, or just a simple swaddle may create magic.

Neutral or pastel colors of backgrounds and props are pretty easy to work with while maintaining focus on your baby. Busy patterns distract from the sweet little features.

Some super-easy props that come in quite handy include:

A woven basket lined with a soft blanket
A soft rug for overhead shots.
Include an old favorite animal to personalize photos.

5. The Detail
This stage will be missed because of the small, new details. Take photos of the little things, including your baby's hands, feet, eyelashes, and rolls of fat.

Include your hand in the framing for capturing their tiny size—it is a gorgeous way to present it.

6. Easy Posing
The posing must be simple and natural for safety and great pictures. Lay your baby on his or her back or side, snuggled warmly in a soft blanket. You can also pose your baby on his tummy with their hands tucked under the chin.

If your baby is awake, you can try to capture expressions and movement. But above all, just let your baby be comfortable and never force a pose.

7. Involve the Whole Family
Some of the sweetest photos are those that include the parents or siblings. Click candid shots of the family holding the baby or gazing lovingly at them. It's these natural interactions that will make your photos truly special.

8. Editing for Finished Look
Of course, once the photos are taken, a bit of editing goes a long way in enhancing them. Adjust brightness, contrast, and warmth for soft dreamy effects. Lightroom or Snapseed is an excellent tool for easy editing.
