Newborn Photography in Raleigh: When to Book, What to Expect

By Bernice Isley | Mess Of A Dreamer Photography

You’re holding the tiniest person you’ve ever met. You haven’t slept in what feels like a week. And somewhere in the back of your mind is one quiet thought: I want to remember this.

Every mom I know has had that thought. And every mom I know has followed it with, “But where do I even start?”

I’m Bernice, a Raleigh newborn photographer and a mom of three, and for over ten years I’ve helped families through exactly this moment. This guide covers what I wish someone had told me: when to book, what actually happens at a session, how to prepare, what newborn photography costs, and how to choose someone you’ll trust with your brand-new baby.

Grab your coffee. (Reheat it if you need to. We’ve all been there.)

When Should You Book Newborn Photos?

Sooner than you think.

Newborns are usually at their sleepiest, and easiest to photograph peacefully, in the first couple of weeks of life. But babies arrive on their own schedule, so the smartest time to book is before yours is born. Most of the moms I work with reserve their date when they’re about 12 to 22 weeks pregnant. I only take a limited number of newborn sessions each month, and booking early lets me save space around your due date.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Reach out while you’re expecting. Tell me your due date and I’ll hold space around it.
  2. Let your baby arrive on their own time. Due dates are more like suggestions, and I plan for that.
  3. We find the day that works best for your family once your little one is here. Typically 5-14 days old.

Already holding your baby and didn’t book ahead? Don’t panic. Reach out and we’ll see what’s possible. I have photographed babies as old as 10 weeks.

In-Home or Studio: Which Is Right for Your Family?

There’s no wrong answer. Here’s how I help families decide.

In-home sessions

I bring everything to you. That means no packing the diaper bag, no wrestling a car seat, and no loading a days-old baby (or two, if you have twins) into the car. You stay in your own space, with your own blankets and your own nursery, and your baby stays on their regular rhythm. A mom of twins once told me the in-home option was what made the whole experience feel doable.

Studio sessions

If you love the clean, timeless look of a studio, you’re welcome to come to my Raleigh studio. It’s calm, warm, and designed with your comfort in mind. Studio sessions are a great fit if you’re feeling up for a short outing.

Not sure which to choose? That’s one of the most common questions I get, and we’ll talk it through together when you inquire.

What Actually Happens at a Newborn Session

Here’s the part most new moms are curious (and a little nervous) about. The short version: it’s baby-led. Whether your little one sleeps the whole time or wants to nurse every 20 minutes, nothing about this has to feel rushed or stiff.

  • We settle in. You’re not performing for me. We take a moment, feed your baby if they need it, and I get a feel for your family’s rhythm.
  • We capture the details. Tiny fingers, tiny toes, sleepy faces, and all the little things you’ll wish you could freeze.
  • We include you. Parents and siblings are part of this story too, and the connection between you and your baby is often what you’ll treasure most.
  • We pause whenever baby needs it. Feeding, soothing, and diaper changes happen as often as they need to.

Plan on about 2 to 3 hours in total. It varies baby to baby. I have finished in as earlier as an hour.

Your baby’s safety and comfort always come first. I have trained in safe posing of newborns and I am licensed and insured. If something isn’t working for your baby, we move on.

How to Prepare (Without Losing Your Mind)

After you book, I send you a simple prep guide, and I’m happy to help with outfit ideas if you’d like. No overthinking, no pressure. A few quick tips in the meantime:

  • Feed your baby just before we start, if you can. A full tummy makes for a sleepier baby. Clenched fist are a true indicator that baby is still hungry.
  • Keep the room cozy and warm. Babies settle more easily when they’re comfortable.
  • Keep outfits simple. Soft solids and neutral tones photograph beautifully and don’t compete with your baby.
  • Don’t clean your whole house. Seriously. I’m here for the baby, not the baseboards.
  • Drink some water and eat something. You’re recovering and feeding a human. Take care of you, too.

How Much Does Newborn Photography Cost in Raleigh?

Prices vary quite a bit from photographer to photographer, so it helps to know what drives them. That way you can compare apples to apples:

  • How much time the photographer plans around your baby’s pace
  • Whether the session is in-home or in a studio
  • How many edited images are included in your gallery
  • Prints, albums, and wall art
  • The photographer’s experience and safety training

My newborn packages start at $399, and you can see everything on my pricing page. Whoever you choose, ask what’s included, how many edited images you’ll receive, and whether prints or digital files are part of the package.

How to Choose a Newborn Photographer You’ll Trust

You’re handing someone your newest, most precious person. Here’s what I’d look for:

  • Safety first. Ask about their newborn safety training and how they approach posing.
  • A consistent portfolio. Look for a style you love across many families, not just a few highlight shots. You can browse my portfolio to see mine.
  • Real reviews. Read what other parents say about how the photographer made them feel, and how they handled their babies.
  • Clear pricing. You should know what’s included before you book.
  • Flexibility. Ask whether they offer in-home sessions and how they handle feeding breaks and fussy moments.
  • Good communication. You should feel taken care of from your very first message.
